Principal's Bio

My name is Phyllis Clemons and I am honored to serve as principal of New Horizons and DeSoto Early Childhood Center. I have worked in the School District of DeSoto County since 1989. I began my career at Desoto Early Childhood Center, then moved on to West Elementary School where I was a teacher. After that I served as assistant principal at both Memorial Elementary School and West Elementary School. I then served as principal at West Elementary, then New Horizons and DeSoto Early Childhood Center.

Although I had no plans to be a teacher, I always knew that I wanted to positively influence the lives of others. My educational journey began at South Florida State College where I earned my Associate’s Degree. After that I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in education, and my Master’s Degree from the University of South Florida.

In April of 1993, I was recognized as “Employee of the Year” at DeSoto Early Childhood Center. During the 1999-2000 school year, I was presented with the “Outstanding Commitment and Dedication to Children” award at West Elementary School.

Throughout the years, I have had the privilege of working with students of all capacities. English language learners, struggling learners, as well as gifted learners. I have gained a lot of knowledge in the process of working with these students and I look forward to continuing my work here at New Horizons and DeSoto Early Childhood Center.

My mission is to work with the teachers and staff at New Horizons and DeSoto Early Childhood Center, as well as district personnel and stakeholders to provide your child with the best learning experience possible.
